The program aims to cultivate leaders and ambassadors who can navigate and contribute our interconnecting world, both within the University and beyond. The Global Scholars Student Experience

As a Global Scholar, students will actively engage in creating and organizing events that promote cultural exchange and inclusivity on campus. These events enhance the sense of community among international and domestic students and foster an environment of learning and mutual respect. In addition, scholars will receive guidance on understanding their immigration status and related policies.  

Benefits of Joining the Global Scholars Program

Each Global Scholar receives a $2,000 scholarship to support their academic endeavors and personal development.

Additional benefits include: 

  • Special events, workshops and leadership training: Scholars have exclusive access to a variety of special events and workshops to enhance their academic and leadership skills.
  • Exclusive networking opportunities: The program facilitates unique networking opportunities with faculty, professionals and fellow scholars.
  • Recognition as Global Scholars: Students in the program will receive formal recognition as Global Scholars, highlighting their commitment to academic excellence and leadership.

Special Events and Activities

As leaders within the St. Mary’s community, Global Scholars will take part in many international leadership events throughout the year, such as:

  • Continuing the Heritage Day of Service
  • Events hosted by the Center for International Programs
  • Global Scholar meetings
  • International Education Week
  • Rattler Refuels hosted by the Center for International Programs
  • Semester retreats
  • Study Abroad fairs
  • Global Scholars must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher and good academic standing to renew their scholarship each year, with regular check-ins to monitor progress.
  • Students must re-apply each year, reflecting on their growth and participation, which is evaluated through attendance at meetings, retreats and events.
  • Scholars are required to complete four hours of community service and attend 18 hours of program events each semester. Participation in special activities, semester retreats and personal development, preparing them to be leaders who contribute positively to global engagement.
Requirements of a Global Scholar

How do I apply to the Global Scholars Program?

The Global Scholars program is open to all majors. Those interested in joining the program must complete their applications for undergraduate admission to St. Mary’s first. Once completed, qualified applicants will be invited to submit a separate application to the Global Scholars Program online and submit the following:

  • Essay
  • Résumé
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Video 

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the Global Scholars Program, students must meet the following criteria: 

  • An incoming international freshman enrolled full-time at St. Mary’s University
  • Demonstrate leadership potential and commitment to fostering cross-cultural exchange
  • Maintain an F-1 student visa while studying at St. Mary’s University
  • Good academic and student conduct standing
