“What’s going on in the Middle East?” is on the minds of many Americans today. St. Mary’s University will get an expert’s take on that topic Sept. 18.

Gökhan Bacik, Ph.D., Professor of International Relations at Ipek University in Anakara, Turkey, will visit St. Mary’s on Thursday to deliver a presentation exploring the underlying dynamics of current political developments in the Middle East, with a focus on the issue of state collapse. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. in the Hospitality Suite of the Alumni Athletics and Convocation Center on campus.

The presentation also will address the roles radical Islamic movements and Shiite politics will play in the region’s future.

Bacik is the dean and professor of international relations at Ipek University School of Government. He has taught in several European Universities as Erasmus Visiting Professor. He is the author of “September 11 and World Politics,” “Modern International System: Genealogy, Teleology and the Expansion,” and “Hybrid Sovereignty in the Arab Middle East.”

The St. Mary’s International Relations department would like to thank The Dialogue Institute of the Southwest for inviting Dr. Bacik to San Antonio and for making this presentation possible.
