WICHITA, Kan. – Winning their fifth and sixth straight, the No. 11 St. Mary’s baseball team beat Newman 9-1 and 3-1 on Friday to remain atop the Heartland Conference standings.
St. Mary’s (24-6, 15-2 in Heartland Conference) totaled eight runs over the fourth and fifth innings to blow open what was a 1-1 game in Game 1.
A two-run fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie in Game 2.
Spurring the first victory, centerfielder Billy Richard (So., Schertz, Texas) and shortstop Esteban Raygoza (Jr., San Antonio) each had two RBIs on 2-for-4 outings. Designated hitter Derek Moczygemba (So., Bulverde, Texas) and Raygoza both scored twice, while third baseman Reagan Moczygemba (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Richard and Reagan Moczygemba added an RBI apiece in Game 2.
Greg Herbst (Sr., San Antonio) struck out eight to pick up the Game 2 victory, while ace Matt Holland (Sr., Shreveport, La.) improved to 7-1 on the season with the Game 1 win. Holland struck out seven.
St. Mary’s will conclude the three-game series with Newman at 12 p.m. Saturday.
