Warrensburg, Mo. – Matt Holland threw a complete game on the mound and the St. Mary’s University offense came alive, led by Jonathan Cisneros, as the Rattlers rallied to defeat the University of Nebraska-Omaha, 8-6, on the second day of the NCAA South Central Region Tournament. With the victory, St. Mary’s is now 40-18 this season, while UNO finished the 2010 season at 32-20. The Rattlers will face the loser of the University of the Incarnate Word-Abilene Christian University game on Saturday at noon in an elimination game.

Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) allowed three runs in the first inning, and then settled down to hold the Mavericks to just three runs over the next eight innings. The complete game was his seventh of the season and was his second nine-inning complete game of the season. He allowed 5 earned runs on 12 hits and 1 walk, while striking out a season-high 9 batters. He improved to team-best 11-3 this season. He threw 129 pitches in the victory and retired the last 10 batters of the game.

Holland had his struggles in the first inning as UNO took an early 3-0 lead. The first four batters of the game reached on base hits, plating three runs, and giving the Mavericks a chance to break the game open early. But Holland settled down and retired the next three batters of the inning to get out of the jam. The Rattler offense responded in the top of the second inning.

Cisneros (Sr., San Antonio) led off with a single to right and Jason Garcia (Jr., Falfurrias, Texas) followed with a single of his own. A sacrifice bunt by Reagan Moczygemba (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) moved the runners to second and third. One out later, Tyler Migl (So., San Antonio) put the Rattlers on the board, smacking a two-run single to left. Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio) then brought home Migl with a single, tying the game at 3-3.

In the fourth inning, the Rattlers took the lead for the first time when James Hipp (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) singled to score Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio), making the score 4-3. However, the Mavericks responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to retake the lead. That was where the score would stay until the sixth inning.

McElroy led off with a walk and Hipp also drew a free pass. One out later, Greg Herbst (Jr., San Antonio) lined a double to left-center, scoring both runners. Cisneros gave the Rattlers a two-run lead with a single, scoring Herbst.

The Mavericks pulled within one run on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. But the Rattlers responded again, scoring a single run in the seventh, when Hipp grounded out to second base, scoring Migl to make the score 8-6. From there Holland took over, retiring the last 10 batters of the game.

Cisneros went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Garcia finished 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Rattler offense. Migl was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, while Hipp and McElroy each had two base hits.
