San Antonio – Six St. Mary’s University men’s soccer players: Kyle Farrell, Scott Kilpatrick, David Peterson, Bryon Plagge, Luke Smith, Kris Sumter, were named All-Heartland Conference in a vote of conference coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.

Farrell (So., Edmond, Okla.) earned second team All-Heartland Conference honors in just his second season with the team. He played in all 19 games, making 15 starts. He scored two goals in just 11 shots this season. Both is his goals were game-winners. In the Rattlers season finale, he scored the game-winning goal on a header off a corner kick to help St. Mary’s upset St. Edward’s (11/4). He also helped anchor a defense that allowed less than two goals per game this season.

Kilpatrick (Sr., Converse) earned all-conference honors for the fourth straight year, taking second team honors. He finished third on the team in scoring with nine points on two goals and five assists. He scored his first goal of the season against Newman. Kilpatrick scored the lone goal of the game for the Rattlers in a loss to Eastern New Mexico. Kilpatrick assisted on David Peterson’s game-winning goal against Incarnate Word and also helped the Rattlers to an upset of St. Edward’s University in the season finale, assisting on Kyle Farrell’s game-winning goal. For his career he had 20 goals and 10 assists for a total of 50 points. He played in 68 games during his career, more than any other Rattler in the Division II era.

Peterson (Fr., Saginaw) had an outstanding first season with the team, scoring eight goals, including three game-winners on his way to earning second team All-Heartland honors. He led the team in scoring, despite playing in just 12 games as an injury ended his season early. Twice he was honored as Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Peterson led the Rattlers to a 1-0 win over Heartland Champion Incarnate Word, scoring the only goal of the game on Oct. 3. He had two multiple-goal games, scoring twice against both Newman and St. Thomas. He scored his eight goals on just 22 shots this season. He ranks first in the Heartland Conference in points per game and is second in goals per game. Despite playing in just 12 games, he is also second in total goals scored.

Plagge (Jr., San Antonio) earned All-Heartland Conference honors for the first time this season, being named to the second team. He set personal bests in goals, assists and points scored. He scored three goals and had a team-high five assists for 11 points. Plagge helped the Rattlers to an upset of St. Edward’s in the season finale, scoring the tying goal in a 2-1 win (11/4). In his career Plagge has played in 51 games, scoring seven goals and assisting on five.

Smith (Sr., Kerrville) was named second All-Heartland Conference for the first time as a Rattler. The former walk-on finished his career as one of the top defensive players in the Heartland Conference and the Midwest Region. Smith played in 18 games, scoring two goals and assisting on one. He was named Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week once this season. Smith helped anchor a defense that allowed less than two goals a game and posted two shutouts. In his career Smith scored three goals and added two assists, while playing in 60 games over his four years with the team.

Sumter (Sr., San Antonio) earned all-conference honors for the third straight season, picking up second team recognition. He scored three goals and added three assists this season. He took a team-high 59 shots this season. Against St. Thomas on Oct. 5, he dished out a career-high two assists. He scored goals in each of the first two games this season. In his career he played in 66 games, scoring nine goals and adding five assists.

St. Mary’s finished 8-11 overall this season and 5-5 in Heartland Conference play, good for third place in the conference. They had wins over the University of the Incarnate Word and St. Edward’s University, both of whom were regionally ranked this season. The eight wins ties for the most since the 2002 season.
