Lady Rattlers sophomore center Flavia Azinheira sizzled with back-to-back performances over the weekend, and the Heartland Conference on Monday recognized her achievements on the basketball court by naming the Mozambique native Heartland Conference Player of the Week.
Azinheira, named Most Outstanding Player in the Turkey Shootout in Kingsville this weekend, had consecutive scoring performances of 27 and 36 points, and helped the Lady Rattlers (1-4) etch their first victory against Ferris State on Saturday. St. Mary’s won the contest 83-80.
Azinheira, averaging 18.2 points, has steadily improved her scoring totals in every game this season. The sophomore scored six in the season opener, followed by scoring totals of eight, 14, 27 and now 36 points.
St. Mary’s plays again on Nov. 29, traveling to play Texas A&M-International.
