WHAT: Approximately 264 students in the San Antonio Pre-freshman Engineering Program, mostly minority youth in the ninth-eleventh grades from area high schools, are graduating after completing their third year in the eight-week summer program. St. Mary’s University, program site for third-year students, will present a total of $260,000 in scholarships to the PREP class of 2004.
City Councilman Julian Castro will be the guest speaker.

OF INTEREST: Valero Energy Corp. became a corporate PREP sponsor in 2004. Now in its 26th year, PREP is designed to provide students with an introductory and hands on introduction to engineering education. While attending St. Mary’s summer PREP, students study statistics, problem solving and technical writing. The program prepares the students for intensive study leading up to college.
