The Department of Languages at St. Mary’s University will sponsor a
screening of the film “Terra Estrangeira”
(“Foreign Land”) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Conference Room B of the
University Center. The film
is in Portuguese with English subtitles.

The screening is free and open to the public. After the screening there
will be a panel discussion featuring
university faculty from St. Mary’s, University of the Incarnate Word and
Trinity University who will discuss
their interests and experiences in Brazil.

The foreign language film was highly acclaimed, and was part of the
official selection for the Sundance Film
Festival. According to the London Evening Standard, the film is “Brazilian
real life . . . beautifully shot.”

Brazil, with 170 million people, is a culturally vibrant nation that is
growing increasingly important on the
world economic stage. St. Mary’s is the first institution of higher
learning in San Antonio to offer
a degree program in Portuguese. The University also began a study abroad
program in Brazil this year.
The film screening is part of International Education Week.
