The St. Mary’s University community mourned the passing of Rattler Men’s Basketball legend Robert Reid (B.A. ’77), who died in Houston in February at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer. Reid, a three-time All-American in the Gold and Blue, was known for his magnetic personality and strong faith.

Reid gained national fanfare during a 13-year NBA career — most notably during a 10-year stint with the Houston Rockets that featured a pair of appearances in the NBA Finals. “Robert is one of the most recognizable figures in St. Mary’s Basketball history and had a larger-than-life personality,” Rattlers Basketball Head Coach Bubba Meyer said. “His impact will never be forgotten.”

Reid, who in 1987 was inducted into the St. Mary’s Athletics Hall of Fame, scored 1,509 points and hauled in 832 rebounds during his collegiate career from 1974 to 1977. Those tallies still rank eighth and fourth, respectively, in Rattler history. “He has stayed connected to the program and his teammates since he first stepped foot on campus as a freshman,” Meyer said. “Robert was a true supporter of St. Mary’s and the Men’s Basketball program.”

In lieu of flowers, Reid’s family requests for donations to be made to the St. Mary’s Men’s Basketball program. Checks can be made payable to St. Mary’s University, with Men’s Basketball denoted and mailed to One Camino Santa Maria, San Antonio, TX 78228.
