Earn a Certificate in Biblical Studies from St. Mary’s

The Graduate Certificate in Biblical Studies provides students with a core foundation in how to read the Bible, namely the academic study and application of methods of interpretation to biblical literature. The certificate requires four Scripture courses (12 hours) from the Master of Arts in Theology curriculum. The certificate is designed for students considering graduate work in theology but who may not wish to pursue a full master’s program. Courses taken toward the certificate can be transferred toward the Master of Arts in Theology at St. Mary’s University.

    Students will take 12 hours of Scripture courses from the Master of Arts in Theology curriculum.

    The Department of Theology also offers a certificate in Theology.

    Courses taken in both certificate programs can be transferred toward the Master of Arts in Theology at St. Mary’s.

  • Courses

    Students will choose four of the Scripture courses offered in the Department of Theology. Course work is offered in a hybrid, synchronous format, with both virtual and in-person options available.

    Some examples of courses include:

    • Biblical Hebrew
    • Law of Moses
    • Original Language Tools for Biblical Studies
    • The Gospel of Matthew
    • The Interpretation of the History of Israel
    • The Johannine Literature


Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements and Process

To apply to the Graduate Certificate in Biblical Studies, complete the St. Mary’s application for graduate admission and submit an official degree-granting transcript, one letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose. International applicants must send an international credential evaluation from a NACES member agency. The GRE/GMAT is not required for admission to the certificate program.
