Department
Drama at St. Mary’s
Theatre, in its distinctive artistic form, reveals and imparts the complexities of the human condition.
The Department of Drama at St. Mary’s University provides for the artistic foundation of the University and promotes aesthetic awareness in the community. Much of the focus of the Minor in Drama is not only on the educational and professional development of its students but also on advocating an appreciation of theater in the cultural life of the University.
Through the medium of theater, we expose it as a collaborative and communal art that reveals any facet of the human condition at a given time. Its transformative nature ultimately results in a work that engages the theatre artist with an audience. We foster a student’s inherent creativity and nurture it into that theatrical expression. Students actively partake in the interactive dynamic between apprentice and professional through scholarship, training and performance.
Program of Study
The Drama minor easily fits into many degree plans. Many majors allow enough hours for a Drama minor that not only complements but also enhances the discipline. The Department provides course offerings for the Drama Minor, the Fine Arts requirement of the St. Mary’s Core Curriculum, as well as for electives in students’ degree plans.
Our academic offerings encompass a foundational approach to theatre that invites students to explore more specialized topics and applications. The emphasis is on practice, production, and performance. Each of these areas allows for the pursuit of historical and contemporary trends while perfecting student skills and knowledge.
Students are exposed to methodology that theatre can bring to the educational process through our course work, theatre production, community outreach, and professional development.

It also serves as an advocate for how theatre can enrich lives and promote human understanding.
