Master’s in Computer Information Systems

The Master of Science in Computer Information Systems at St. Mary’s prepares students to manage software development projects. Students develop or deepen skills to analyze, design, implement and test stand-alone and embedded software systems. The program provides a deep understanding of the hardware and software components of computer systems and the following topics: 

Data communication and databases 
Hardware organization and operating systems 
Software analysis and design methodologies 
Software implementation and testing

  Students can pursue a combined five-year program to pursue a Bachelor’s and Master of Science in Computer Information Systems. Combined degree programs allow undergraduate students to begin graduate studies in their junior year and pay the undergraduate tuition rate, a substantial savings. They also shorten the time it takes to earn two degrees.

  Students take 33 credit hours of courses and may elect a thesis or a project option. The thesis option consists of 27 credit hours of course work and 6 credit hours of thesis direction. Non-thesis students must complete 30 credit hours of course work and 3 credit hours of a capstone project.

What can I do with a master’s in Computer Information Systems?

Computer scientists are in high demand in organizations that develop or use software. Most companies have information technology (IT) departments or at least an IT expert on staff. Typical employers include computer companies, research and development laboratories, educational organizations, entertainment industries, aerospace contractors, financial institutions, telecommunication companies and government agencies.

Computer information systems professionals work in jobs such as:

Analyst
Operations officer
Technical director 

Admission Requirements and Process

Applicants should have taken programming classes, including data structures and object-oriented programming. Prerequisites include computer programming skills, mathematical maturity and relevant technical knowledge. 

To apply to the Master of Science in Computer Information Systems, submit a completed application form, two letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a résume/CV and an official degree-granting transcript. International applicants must send an international credential evaluation from a NACES member agency. The GRE/GMAT is not required for admission to this program.
