Industrial Engineering at St. Mary’s

The Industrial Engineering program at St. Mary’s University was established in 1960 as the University’s first engineering program, and it is still the only Industrial Engineering major in San Antonio. 

Industrial engineers improve efficiency and productivity in manufacturing and service industries. Working with both people and technology, students in the Industrial Engineering program learn to reduce waste, increase quality and work in technical and managerial positions. 

Program of Study

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering is 128 credit hours, including 84 hours in Industrial Engineering courses and an elective in Engineering. Students will complete a year-long design project during their senior year.

Student Engagement

Many junior and senior students volunteer their time to tutor freshmen and sophomores in mathematics and engineering courses. Students also participate in funded faculty research and in student organizations and student chapters such as:

  • Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) 
  • Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) 
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 
  • The National Organization of Leadership and Success (NSLS) 
  • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) 
  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE) 

Internships and Applied Projects

Every Engineering senior also completes a year-long design project, some of which have even been patented. Many students also participate in the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), a professional society for industrial engineers.

Science Living Community

Students majoring in any science — from Physics to Computer Science, Biology to Engineering — can join the Science Living Community. Members live together and can participate in a variety of programs throughout the year.


Labs and Facilities

Engineering students have 24-hour access to:

  • an electrical engineering laboratory
  • an energy conversion laboratory for motors, generators and transformers
  • a manufacturing and robotics laboratory
  • a research lab equipped with both UNIX and Windows workstations
