Student Staff at St. Mary’s University are a central component to our Residence Life Office. They go through an intensive selection and training development process in order to be fully prepared to help our residents throughout their experience of living on campus.

Resident Assistants (RAs)

RAs are live-in peer advisors and educators who work with residents to assist them in addressing their needs within a residence hall and the University community. RAs work to identify student needs and respond to those needs utilizing a residential curriculum grounded in the Catholic, Marianist heritage of the University. In doing so, they support students’ educational, personal, social, spiritual and cultural growth. RAs are also critical staff members in maintaining the safety and well-being of students living in the residence halls.

RAs are on duty in each residential area starting at 7 p.m. each night and ending at 7 a.m. each morning throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. Additionally, an RA will be at each residential area’s main desk each night from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to ensure the safety of the community. The RA on duty is available to serve and share in the responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure living environment by enforcing University policies and addressing safety issues.

  • Community Coordinators (CCs)

The Community Coordinator is a peer advisor and educator who works with residents and faculty/staff in a specific Living Learning Community to bridge the residential and academic/program experiences. The role of the CC involves serving in a mentoring capacity and maintaining a community environment in the learning communities, which support a student’s educational, personal, social, spiritual and cultural growth.

  • Hall Assistants

Hall Assistants are students hired through our University work-study program that provides support to the Area Coordinator and Graduate Assistants in their role of managing the operations of a hall office. They often serve as administrative assistants for the hall office, answering phone calls and questions received about the residence hall and campus resources. If you are interested in learning more about working as a Hall Assistant, contact the Office of Financial Assistance to find out if you qualify for work-study and any available openings for Hall Assistants.
