Practicing the Marianist charism can be its own award, but St. Mary’s University continues to spotlight students, faculty and staff who vigorously participate in its mission.

Patricia Roberts, J.D.,

Gathering to celebrate the life and heritage of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, founder of the Society of Mary, St. Mary’s honored five of its community members with the 2025 Marianist Heritage Award, recognizing those who showcase faithfulness to the University’s Marianist heritage.

The Marianist Heritage Award annually celebrates those who express an interest in development through the Marianist charism through efforts at increasing knowledge and working for its transformation into practice in the University community.

Faculty and staff nominated for the Marianist Heritage Award should be employed at St. Mary’s for at least two years, and students must be graduating seniors.

Francisco Garcia

This year’s recipients include three students from varying majors — Arturo Cantú, Francisco Garcia and Viviana Gonzalez — as well as School of Law Dean Patricia Roberts, J.D., and Executive Assistant in the Office of Mission Cindy Stooksberry.

The annual award is given in January during Marianist Heritage Month. The recipients will be recognized on Jan. 23 with a breakfast and again during the Marianist Heritage Mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Since 1981, St. Mary’s has recognized 100 employees with the award and 93 students since 1984.
