San Antonio – They’ve won 13 straight, are ranked fourth in the nation and, now, top the NCAA Division II South Central Region poll.

For the first time this season, the St. Mary’s baseball team took over the top spot in the NCAA’s regional rankings, meaning the Rattlers are on track to possibly host the regional tournament later this month.

The poll was released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

St. Mary’s, which will host the Heartland Conference Tournament from May 12-14, is 42-8 on the season. The Rattlers, ranked fourth in the nation, won the regular-season conference crown with a 27-3 mark in league play, with all three losses coming by one run. In fact, four of their eight losses have been by one run, with six coming by no more than two runs.

Earlier this week, St. Mary’s moved up to No. 4 in the national rankings in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper polls.

St. Mary’s is 24-2 over the past 26 games. The Rattlers also boast matching home and road records of 21-4.
