Seguin, Texas – Two players from other schools dropped out of the competition because of the extreme heat, while some others suffered from cramps, but the St. Mary’s Rattlers opened Texas Lutheran’s 1st Annual Doc Skogman Invitational with promising results.

Marcin Marczewski (Jr., Warsaw, Poland) won both matches, beating Our Lady of the Lake University’s Santiago Padilla 6-0, 6-4 before defeating Texas Lutheran’s Travis Conn 7-5, 6-0.

Andre Klipa (So., Belgrade, Serbia) beat TLU’s Michael Packard 6-0, 6-0 in his first match, but pulled out of his second with cramps. Both Klipa and Marczewski competed in the Flight A Singles.

Meanwhile, Guy Rutten (Sr., Almelo, Netherlands) routed TLU’s Steven Frenzel 6-1, 6-0 before narrowly falling to Tom Greer-Smith 6-0, 1-6, 6-10. Nestor Moreno (Jr., Bogota, Columbia), beat OLLU’s Aaron Rodriguez 7-5, 6-4 and Southwestern University’s Andy Clarage 6-1, 6-1. Also victorious was Jake Williams (Jr., Dallas), who defeated TLU’s Ryan Delcambre 6-3, 6-1 and Temple Junior College’s Rene Martinez 6-1, 6-1.

TLU’s Nick Henderson barely got the better of Shawn Cavazos (So., Rockport, Texas), winning 4-6, 3-6, while Andrew Flores (So., San Antonio) fell 1-6, 0-6.

Carlos Olea (Fr., Matamoros, Mexico) won his first match as a Rattler, beating TLU’s Kevin Haugen 6-1, 6-0, while Sergio Leal (Fr., San Antonio) also came out victorious in his debut, edging TLU’s Phillip Bauch 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play, Marczewski and Williams teamed to beat a duo from TLU 8-2, while Cavazos and Leal also beat a pair from TLU.

Competition resumes Saturday.
