St. Mary’s sophomore infielder Mary K Pederson blasted a deep shot past the left field wall in the seventh inning to secure the Lady Rattlers’ season-opening victory Thursday afternoon at the SAISD Spring Sports Complex in San Antonio.
The Lady Rattlers downed Southern Arkansas 3-1 to open play in the St. Mary’s University College Classic.
Pederson’s blast came the most opportune of times, handing the Lady Rattlers (1-0) their first lead of the contest after they tied the game at 1-1 earlier that same inning.
Sophomore pitcher Malissa Magee pitched the winninig contest for St. Mary’s, which opened the season as the preseason favorite to repeat as Heartland Conference champions in a poll released on Monday.
The Lady Rattlers resume play on Friday, taking on Abilene Christian at 1:30 p.m. and Cameron at 3:45 p.m.
