San Antonio – St. Mary’s University shot just 23.1 percent from the field and Northeastern State University outrebounded the Rattlers 44 to 32 as the Lady Reds won 57-40 in non-conference women’s basketball action Friday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena.
Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch in the first half with the Rattlers hitting on just 22.2 percent of their shots (6-27) and NSU making only 30.8 percent (8-26). The Lady Reds took a 21-18 lead into the locker room at the break.
Leading 31-27 with 13:16 left to play, the Lady Reds went on a 9-2 run to expand their lead to 13 points at 42-29. A 10-1 run down the stretch put the game out of reach.
Ashton Benford (So., Waxahachie) led all players in scoring with 13 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots. She was the only Rattler to score in double figures. Charlena Rodez (Sr., Cedar Park) led all players with 12 rebounds, one off her career high, and scored nine points. Natalie Gamez (So., San Antonio) had nine points off the bench. For the Lady Reds, Jezzal Quintana had 11 points.
With the loss the Rattlers fell to 2-9 overall this season, while Northeastern State improved to 7-4. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday, December 29 at 5:30 p.m. when they host Southwestern College (Kansas) at Bill Greehey Arena.
