If the following sounds like a mere repeat of last week’s headline, then that’s because it practically is, as the Heartland Conference on Monday again named Lady Rattlers sophomore post Flavia Azinheira Heartland Conference Player of the Week.
Azinheira averaged 22 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games last week to capture the honors for the second consecutive week. Azinheira, leading St. Mary’s with 19.6 points and 7.3 rebounds this season, has been one of many Lady Rattlers imperative to the team’s recent resurgence.
St. Mary’s, which started the season 0-4, is currently on a four-game win streak that has improved its record to 4-4 on the season. The Lady Rattlers have a chance to extend that streak to five games against Angelo State University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
Azinheira, a native of Mozambique and first-year Rattler, transferred to St. Mary’s after playing as a freshman at Seward County Community College (Kan.) last year.
Azinheira was named Most Outstanding Player in the Turkey Shootout in Kingsville, Texas, on Nov. 25-26, following consecutive scoring performances of 27 and 36 points.
