Steve Johnson, Ph.D., St. Mary’s University associate athletics director, announced his resignation on Monday, Jan. 6. Johnson, who as associate AD served as sports information director, NCAA compliance coordinator and Title IX compliance officer, stated that “It was just time. I’d been doing this too long. It was getting stale.”
Johnson joined the athletics department as SID and NCAA compliance coordinator in 1998. He was later promoted to associate athletics director while retaining his sports information and compliance duties. Johnson, who has a doctorate in education, was St. Mary’s education department chairman and faculty athletics representative before joining the athletics department in 1998. Johnson was a secondary school teacher and administrator for 25 years before becoming an education professor at St. Mary’s.
“(Johnson) is a great friend of mine, a valued employee,” St. Mary’s athletic director Charlie Migl said. “I’m going to miss him greatly. He helped me do my job as athletic director as well as I possibly could.” Staffers in St. Mary’s Office of Communications will share sports information duties until a replacement SID is named. A replacement NCAA and Title IX compliance officer has not been named at this time.
